About Capablanca chess

How Capablanca chess works

World champion José Raúl Capablanca proposed the variant in the 1920s to fight what he feared was the coming 'draw death' of chess. The board gains two files and each side two pieces: the Chancellor, which moves as a rook or a knight, and the Archbishop, which moves as a bishop or a knight.

Castling moves the king three squares toward the rook, and pawns may promote to any piece including the two newcomers. Every other rule is standard.

Getting used to the new pieces

The Archbishop alone can deliver checkmate against a bare king on the edge, and the Chancellor is worth almost a queen. Knight-forks arrive from pieces that also control long lines, so tactics are richer and the opening less forgiving than on 8 × 8.
