About Go
How Go is played
Two players alternately place black and white stones on the intersections of the grid; Black plays first. Stones never move. Orthogonally adjacent empty points are a group's liberties, and a group with no liberties left is captured and removed. Placing a stone with no liberties is illegal unless it captures.
The aim is to surround more territory — empty points enclosed by your stones — than your opponent. A player may pass at any time, and two consecutive passes end the game.
Which board size to choose
The 19 × 19 board is the tournament standard and rewards deep whole-board strategy. 13 × 13 keeps the opening interesting at half the length, and 9 × 9 is where beginners should start: games take minutes and every game is a lesson in life-and-death fighting. Use the game switcher inside the board to change size.
