About Sittuyin

The placement phase

Sittuyin begins with the pawns already on the board in a staggered line and the chariots in the corners. Players then alternate placing their remaining pieces — king, general, two elephants and two horses — anywhere behind their own pawn line. Choosing a setup is the first battle of the game.

The board carries two diagonal lines that mark the promotion squares and give the placement phase its visual structure.

How the pieces move

The general moves one square diagonally and the elephant one square diagonally or straight forward, exactly as in Makruk. Horses and chariots move like knights and rooks; pawns move one square forward and capture diagonally.

A pawn may promote to a general when it reaches the far diagonal, but only if your original general has already been captured — each side can have only one general on the board.

Winning the game

Checkmate wins and stalemate is a draw. Sittuyin is slow and deeply positional; with pieces that move only one square, tempo and structure matter more than raw material.
